What are the models of Cummins automotive diesel engines?

Many customers, when looking for Cummins engines, will simply say, "I need a Cummins engine for trucks." But when they actually start searching, they find that Cummins has many models of automotive engines. Actually, you don't need to memorize all the models. For truck and bus engines that we encounter most often, the B series and ISB series are the ones customers frequently ask about.

1. Cummins B170-33

The B170-33 is a relatively old generation of Dongfeng Cummins automotive diesel engine, a 6-cylinder, 3.9L engine with a rated power of 170 HP @ 2500 rpm and a maximum torque of approximately 560 N·m. It belongs to the B series engine and is mainly used in vehicles.

The biggest characteristic of this type of engine is not its complex configuration, but its mature structure, long service life in China, and familiarity among maintenance personnel. Therefore, some older trucks, construction vehicles, or customers needing to replace their original engines will specifically look for the B170-33. If your vehicle originally had this model, when replacing the engine, it's best not to just look at "170 HP," but also check the engine nameplate, engine mounts, flywheel housing, and accessory configuration.

2. Cummins B210-33

The B210-33 and B170-33 belong to the same B-series automotive engine category, but with higher power. The B210-33 has a rated power of 210 HP @ 2500 rpm and a maximum torque of approximately 700 N·m. Data shows it uses a 6-cylinder, 3.9L configuration. For trucks requiring more power, the B210-33 is more suitable than the 170 HP version. When we actually help customers find engines, we often encounter this situation: the customer says, "I need a 210 HP Cummins engine." In this case, we can't immediately say we have it in stock. Because Cummins has many engines around 210 HP, even those with the same 210 horsepower can have completely different engine models, years, emission standards, and configurations. Therefore, it's essential to check the original engine model and nameplate.

3. Cummins ISB4.5

The ISB4.5 is one of Cummins' newer B-series products and a very typical truck and bus engine. Cummins official data shows that the ISB4.5 is used in Euro Truck & Bus, with a power range of 150–210 HP, suitable for trucks and buses; different emission versions also have different power and torque. Compared to earlier B-series engines, the ISB4.5 has been upgraded in fuel system, electronic control, turbocharging, and emission technology. Therefore, if a customer is looking for a newer vehicle engine and simply wants to replace it with a B170-33 or B210-33, extreme caution is advised.

4. Is the ISB4.5-C220-30 a vehicle engine?

If the customer provides the model number ISB4.5-C220-30, it's recommended that you first confirm the specific configuration based on the engine nameplate and serial number. This is because Cummins, within the same basic series, can have engines for different applications and with different calibrations. The customer saying "4.5L Cummins engine" is not enough.

It's best to have the customer provide:

Truck/Bus brand and model

Engine model

Engine serial number

Engine nameplate photo

Rated power

Emission standard

Sometimes, customers only provide a model number, and we directly quote a price based on online information, only to find that the flywheel housing, oil pan, engine mount, or ECU configuration is different, which can actually cause problems.

Common Cummins Automotive Engine Series

From a general perspective of automotive engines, you can simply understand:

B Series: B140-33, B170-33, B190-33, B210-33, etc., are relatively classic automotive engines. Dongfeng Cummins' model catalog lists multiple power ranges for the B series.

ISB Series: ISB3.9, ISB4.5, ISB6.7, etc., mainly used in trucks, buses, and other vehicles.

ISD Series: ISD4.5, ISD6.7, etc., can also be found in commercial vehicles.

ISL/L Series: Primarily for higher-powered trucks, buses, and other applications.

ISZ, ISM, etc.: Higher power, mainly used in heavy-duty trucks and large vehicles. Dongfeng Cummins' current automotive engine catalog also includes the ISZ13, ISM11, and the newer Z14NS6, Z15NS6 series.
